BOTH federal and state opposition leaders have now visited Gladstone in the lead-up to the state election.

The question remains: where is Campbell Newman?

Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten on Tuesday boosted the local campaign of Labor candidate Glenn Butcher at Stockland Shopping Centre, calling the local candidate a "strong leader for the region".

The proposed sale or lease of Gladstone port was forefront in the minds of the local public, with Shorten eager to listen to public concerns about employment and the economy.

Melanie Gourley and daughter Layla, 8, invited the Labor party members to sit at their table to discuss education.

"There are 900 students at my daughter's school. I'm concerned that is too many," she said.

Mr Shorten agreed that was a large number for a primary school.

Members of the Gladstone public expressed concerns about the future of employment, health and education.

Mr Shorten officially launched Labor's local campaign at the Gladstone Bowls Club on Ferris St on Tuesday night.
