Newman: AAA credit rating 'probably three years away'

IT WAS the unofficial election promise made not to the cameras, but to voters on a train station platform.

Speaking to travellers at Landsborough Station on the southern end of the Sunshine Coast on Tuesday, Premier Campbell Newman said he expected to get the state's AAA credit back "probably three years from now".

"As we continue to go on and actually start to really pay that down to an even more affordable level, you know $40 to $45 billion, and it means we can get our AAA credit rating back, ultimately, probably three years from now," he said while chatting to voters on the platform.

"If we do all those things we'll get our AAA back. As a business person you would know that would reduce the interest rate on our debt, make it more manageable and again release more money to invest in services, then you could go from Landsbrough to Nambour."

Following laughter, given that the duplication of the entire Sunshine Coast rail line has been on the region's wish list for years, a move that Mr Newman said the government did not have the money for at the moment, he said that was "the next big part of it".
