Newman boosts G20 security in wake of Boston bombing

SECURITY arrangements for the upcoming G20 event in Brisbane will be enough to protect the city from a possible terrorist attack, according to Premier Campbell Newman.

Mr Newman made the comments in light of the Boston Marathon bombing which killed at least two and injured dozens.

He said his thoughts and prayers were with the city of Boston and the American state of Massachusetts.

The Premier told reporters planning the G20 included a scenario in which the international event was targeted by terrorists.

"That's the way you have to go about thinking about these meetings," Mr Newman said.

"There is legislation being developed that has been through cabinet to give the necessary powers to police and security agencies during the G20.

"It will give them additional powers, but only during the G20, then will immediately have a sunset on them."

G20 is made up of 19 countries plus the European Union.

It will be held in Brisbane on November 15 and 16 in 2014.
