Newman government backpeddles on 1400 approvals claim
A DAY after the Queensland Government celebrated its approval of 1400 applications to explore for minerals, it has rephrased its comments.
It appears Mines Minister Andrew Cripps meant to say these 1400 applications were "progressed" not approved - that is, tjhey are being considered by the department.
Under changes to the process, those wanting to prospect for minerals now have permission from the state to begin consulting with landholders and working out native title arrangements even before the government works through their request.
Traditionally, this would only be done once every other box had been ticked by government.
Applications will still be given proper consideration, a spokeswoman said, but the changes should result in a speedier outcome.
