FORMER Queensland premier Campbell Newman may want to reconsider any plans he has to contest the federal seat of Brisbane, with rating him a remote chance of winning a preselection battle.

The online bookie has priced the former premier's chances of winning preselection as the $3.00 outsider, with an embarrassing pre-selection loss the $1.35 favourite.

Even if Newman did win preselection, Sportsbet would maintain Labor as the favourite to win the seat to be vacated by Liberal Teresa Gambaro.

Newman would enter the race priced at $4.00 to win the seat, while Labor would be the short $1.20 favourite.

"Campbell Newman barely got his feet under the Premier's desk before he was sent packing. He's clearly got a lot more to give, but the odds suggest he probably should wait a bit longer before throwing his hat back in the political ring," said's Ben Bulmer.

Earlier today Newman did not rule out a political comeback to contest the federal seat of Brisbane.

This follows yesterday's announcement by LNP's Teresa Gambaro that she would not contest her seat at the next  election.

Mr Newman's biographer, Gavin King, said today that Mr Newman was "weighing it up" but as yet there was nothing concrete.

It is reported that Mr Campbell has been contacted by a couple of federal MPs and people from the national and the state executive of the LNP.

The surprise announcement by Ms Gambaro's opened up an opportunity that had not been expected and which has sparked much speculation.

ABC (ABC) reported that Mr King said Mr Newman would have to consider his businesses interests and discuss the potential comeback with his wife, Lisa.

After losing last year's Queensland state election and being rejected by voters in his own state seat of Ashgrove, Mr Newman said his political career was over.

There has been mixed reaction to his refusal to rule out a comeback, with Senior Liberal National sources casting doubt on speculation Mr Newman could make a political return. But  Labor candidate Pat O'Neill said he would relish a fight against the former leader.
