No bail over TV carjack at gunpoint

THE man caught on camera allegedly carjacking a local television news crew's vehicle at gunpoint, before crashing the car into an LPG tank at a Doonan service station on November 5, 2014, has been refused bail.

Jordy Brook appeared in Maroochydore Magistrates Court yesterday as he lodged his application for bail.

Mr Brook faced charges including attempted murder, armed robbery and dangerous operation of a vehicle.

While his defence solicitor attempted to have yesterday's proceedings suppressed from the media, Magistrate Rod Madsen allowed the court to remain open.

Police objected to Mr Brook being allowed free on bail.

His defence solicitor explained that medical reports had revealed Mr Brook had suffered a psychotic episode at the time of the alleged offences.

The episode was believed to be as a result of strong prescription medication Mr Brook was taking at the time of the incident, which was described in medical reports as an "acute, psychotic episode".

However his solicitor explained his client's mental situation had been resolved.

Mr Brook's solicitor submitted his client would not pose a risk to society if allowed on bail, with his mother, sister and other community groups prepared to provide supervision.

Police prosecutors argued Mr Brook still posed a risk of re-offending if allowed out on bail.

Magistrate Madsen remanded Mr Brook in custody, with his next appearance set down for April 21, 2015.

Mr Brook's solicitor indicated they intended to rely on insanity as a defence, when the matter reached the Mental Health Court.
