No expansion for bursting prison
THE Maryborough Correctional Centre is well on the way to capacity with 478 out of the 500 available beds filled.
But a Department of Communities spokesman said the figures were not cause for concern with other centres available for prisoners sentenced at Bundaberg.
If the Maryborough facility reached capacity, prisoners were sent to either Capricornia Correctional Centre or Woodford Correctional Centre.
The spokesman said the Maryborough Correctional Centre was always the first place Bundaberg prisoners would be sent to for both pre and post-trial custody.
“An individual sentenced in a Bundaberg court would be received at the Maryborough Correctional Centre, unless it was determined, through liaison with Queensland Police and QCS (Queensland Corrective Services), that they were best placed at an alternate centre," the spokesperson said.
"Maryborough Correctional Centre along with Capricornia Correctional Centre form the central region of Queensland Corrective Services.
"The central region has not at this time been identified as needing expansion.”
