SUNSHINE Coast's Nick D'Arcy has failed to make the final of the men's 200 metre butterfly and a showdown with United States' phenomenon Michael Phelps.
D'Arcy looked sluggish from the start and was never in the hunt in the first semi-final, touching the wall with a time of 1:56.07.
"Obviously pretty disappointing," D'Arcy said.
"I was close to two seconds off my best time."
D'Arcy said his plan of attack failed to fire him into tomorrow morning's (Australian time) final.
"I tried to keep that second fifty under control, but in that last hundred it wasn't there."
Fellow Australian Chris Wright finished last in the heat, recording a time of 1:58.56.
A short distance specialist, Wright said he 'tried something new' to feature amongst the stayers of the field.
