Northern Territory awaits Grant

TROPICAL Cyclone Grant is expected to hit the Australian mainland on Boxing Day after forming off the Northern Territory coast.

However, Darwin residents are likely to be spared the brunt of the weather, with the cyclone directed towards the Coburg Peninsula.

Tropical Cyclone Grant will create potentially fatal gale-force winds and Northern Territory resident in the cyclone's path have been advised to seek shelter.

The cyclone developed into a category one system this morning after moving across the Arafura Sea.
