WILDLY popular adventure race Tough Mudder is unlikely to return this year despite setting an Australian record for participation on its Coast debut 18 months ago.
Sunshine Coast Council tourism and major events portfolio head Jason O'Pray said the event was not likely to return to the Caloundra South site that hosted it for the past two years.
"Unfortunately it looks unlikely at this point," he said.
Pre-registrations have opened for a Tough Mudder obstacle course race in south-east Queensland in 2015 but the exact destination has not been disclosed.
An official statement from the Council said discussions with Tough Mudder were continuing and no decision had been made.
But Cr O'Pray said Tough Mudder's business model meant it was unlikely to run in the same place three years in a row.
"This is not unusual that big operations like this move from region to region.
"Quite rightly they look to capitalise on populations and the Sunshine Coast has certainly done more than its fair share of participation and I'm very proud of the Sunshine Coast for getting behind one of the biggest events on the planet."
Tough Mudder's debut on the Coast in 2013 was its most successful event in Australia with more than 24,000 participants taking part in the extreme adventure course.
It returned last year with about 15,000 competitors doing the course over an especially wet weekend.
It provided a welcome boon to tourism operators, with WorldMark Resort Golden Beach reporting record bookings over the weekend.
Cr O'Pray said council was working with a "handful" of other global events but could not confirm names.
"Other organisers look for an area with an amazing track record so they can host these kinds of events."
Should Council make a stronger effort to keep Tough Mudder here?
This poll ended on 24 January 2016.
Yes. Council should be promoting our interests, not Mudder's.
Yes. We need the income that comes with it.
No. Don't throw money over decisions we can't alter.
No. I don't want Mudder coming back at all.
This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.
