Emerald not giving up on NRL pre-season match
THERE is still a chance Emerald may host a 2015 pre-season match between the Broncos and the Cowboys, but Central Highlands Rugby League president Darren Sargood is not getting his hopes up.
Sargood met with the Cowboys two weeks ago.
They will first offer the game to Mackay, due to the size of the town.
"If I was them, I would say yes," Sargood said.
"You'd be silly to knock it back."
But if Mackay declines to host the match, McIndoe Park will be the next option.
"We still haven't been told no," Sargood said.
"We'll keep doing some minor planning in the background."
Sargood said it would be a major boon for the region to secure the trial match.
"It would be good for the town, it would be good for rugby league," he said.
"We'd have people travelling from Longreach and Barcaldine, all over the Central Highlands and Rockhampton.
"If we get it, it'd be much more than just a game of rugby league."
But it seems more likely than not Emerald will miss out on hosting the game.
"It's not looking good at this stage," Sargood admitted.
"It's no good getting people's hopes up."
Sargood should know within the next month whether or not the town will be given the match.
"The sooner we get the news, the better - whether it's good or bad," he said.
"If we do, well that's fantastic - and if we don't, at least we've tried."
