WITH glaucoma medication an unlikely source of inspiration, US pharmeceutical giant Allergan - better known as the purveyors of Botox - have another prescription smash hit. This time for growing eyelashes.
Reportedly doubling thickness and increasing length by 25 per cent, the only FDA-approved eyelash lengthener, Latisse, has sold 2.5 million bottles since its launch at the end of 2008, and become a celebrity favourite. Naturally, the product's spokemodels Mad Men's Christina Hendricks, Claire Danes and Brooke Shields are among its fans. Danes claims her 'come hither' lashes are so overrun they occassionally need to be trimmed.
The prescription-only product is applied twice daily to upper lashes over two months with maximum growth reached around 16 weeks.
However, it is significantly more expensive than the traditional lash-lengthening methods of mascara or falsies. In the US, the recommended retail price for a 3ml bottle of Latisse solution and 60 disposable applicators (one for each eye) is $120.00.
Worse news for the wallet yet, Latisse, like Botox, is a longterm commitment as the results last only as long as treatment is ongoing. Stopping will undo all the hard work but won't revive your bank balance.
