NRL looks to boost insurance payouts

THE NRL has committed to significantly increasing payments for career-ending injuries in the wake of Knights forward Alex McKinnon and Wests Tigers utility Liam Fulton being forced into premature retirement this season.

Under an interim insurance policy being considered, NRL players would be eligible for payouts of up to $1 million if they suffered career-ending injuries.

The proposed scheme would "top up" the existing insurance arrangements, doubling the payout for total and permanent disability injuries from $500,000 to $1 million.
