FOUR equals $2.45 million. That's right, the New South Wales number plate '4' sold for $2.45 million at auction.
Eccentric billionaire Peter Tseng collects the plates and forked out a record-breaking figure.
The sex toy entrepreneur and wine collector arrived at the Shannons Winter Classic Auction in his red Ferrari, which bears the number '2' which achieved $689,000 at auction back in 2003.
Early guides were that it would reach between $1.2-1.5 million. It was previously owned by Aussie Home Loans founder John Symond who had it on his Rolls-Royce.
The sale was testament to the rarity of the offering...especially considering a 1970 XW GT-HO Phase II sedan - regarded by many enthusiasts as one of the most desirable 'Bathurst 'Higher Option' Fords of the late 1960s and early '70s - reached $215,000 at the same auction.
For the same money as the plate, Mr Tseng could have bought six Tesla S P100Ds, three Ferrari LGTC4s, or a couple of Lamborghini Aventadors...with some change.
The sale rekindled memories of some fine number plates.
One in Queensland saw a Maserati Levante wear 'TRIDENT'. Which pays tribute to the brand's badge.
Then there is 'GAY 44', which could increase in value if the same-sex marriage laws get changed. Although the owner of this plate had to opt for a sticker to explain the moniker - "My name is Gay" - obviously after some interesting feedback on the roads.
Shannons national auction manager Christophe Boribon said the sale of '4' was an outstanding result for a single-digit heritage number plate.
"Just nine of these New South Wales number plates were ever issued, making them ultra-collectible and irreplaceable," he said.
"Their unique status and desirability is never going to change.
"The opportunity to acquire such a plate is exceptionally rare, as most single-digit plates remain in family hands, are usually passed down through generations and rarely, if ever, come onto the open market."
But for those who can't afford their own special plate, there's always a sticker which can help express your personality. This example from the Volkswagen up! is a fine example.
