Olympian takes aim in Toowoomba

IN A coup for the Toowoomba Small Bore Silhouette Rifle Club, Olympian Dane Sampson will compete in the city this weekend.

It will be Sampson's first domestic competition since returning this month from the London 2012 Games.

Sampson will compete in the ISSF 50m prone and 10m air rifle events and is the defending prone and air rifle champion, having won both competitions last year.

Small bore rifle shooters from all over Queensland and northern New South Wales will contest the annual event to be held at the Toowoomba Pistol Club's Anderson Rd facility on Saturday and Sunday.

Darling Downs shooters are also expected to feature prominently with Andrew Shackleton, currently ranked No.2 in the TRA bench rest class, competing.

Local juniors will also have their first taste of competition shooting in what will be an ideal warm-up event for the Queensland Championships to be held at the end of next month.

Shooting starts at 9am on Saturday in the 50m prone and bench rest events.

Air rifle events begin on Saturday afternoon and continue during Sunday.

The weekend culminates with the awarding of the Carnival of Flowers prone, bench rest and air rifle champions for 2012 in both senior and junior competitions.
