Traffic is being diverted through Maryborough.

3:45am: A MAN has died on the Bruce Highway near Tinana after a semi-trailer slammed into the back of another truck.

It is believed the first truck may have been stopped for nearby roadworks.

Both trucks were carrying chemicals and two crews of fire fighters were called to the crash for safety reasons.

Queensland Fire and Rescue Investigator Michael Corser said at the scene they had been concerned damage to the chemical containers could have been dangerous.

"The potential was there," he said.

Insp Corser said fire fighters had been in touch with Brisbane units about the safety of one of the chemicals and believed it did not present an issue.

He said he expected it to be several hours before the highway was clear again.

Police were diverting traffic through Maryborough.

The driver of the other truck is believed to have been uninjured.

The crash occurred at about 10pm on Wednesday night in the northbound lane near the Central Rd exit of the Bruce Highway.

It is the second time the highway has been closed near Maryborough this week after a truck carrying more than 30,000 litres of fuel exploded on Monday morning.
