One-stop-shop for career info

WHETHER you are looking for some job inspiration or a little direction on how to find your career path, the Emerald Careers Expo is the place to go.

The expo is on today in Emerald and co-ordinator Gai Sypher encouraged everyone to come along.

“No one is ever too old and there is a need in society for lifelong learners and the young can come and get some inspiration,” she said.

The careers expo, on a circuit tour throughout Queensland, has exhibitors from as far as New South Wales along with some from the region.

“There is a focus on the mining industry, construction, agriculture, health, tertiary education, employment and apprenticeships,” Gai said.

“In total, 34 exhibitors will be there.”

While there were two sessions open to the public, the midday session was designed for school students and 650 students were being bussed in from Blackwater, Dysart, Capella, Emerald and Springsure to attend the event.

The evening session will include a free sausage sizzle and a career gallery where local students will present the impression gained of their chosen career for the chance to win $500 for their school.

Gai said the evening session would include guest speakers from the agriculture and construction industries, along with small businesses and professionals.

“The advantage of the expo is it’s hands-on and provides face-to-face interaction with people within the field,” she said.

“(Attendees will be able to) speak to people in the know and gain a better understanding of career options.”

Gai said attendees must come prepared so they would get the most out of the expo.

“Most know where they want to go, they just want to know how to get there,” she said.

“You need to be prepared and know what you want to ask.”
