A FEUD lasting decades got the better of Donald Keith Mclaughlin when he grabbed a 79-year-old man through his car window last year.
Mclaughlin faced Rockhampton Magistrates Court yesterday charged with assault after the incident in Biloela on July 21, 2015.
The court heard the elderly man was coming out of a barber shop and heading to his car when he spotted Mclaughlin, who yelled at him then went over to his car and grabbed him through the window which resulted in the man's shirt being torn.
Mclaughlin represented himself in court and told Magistrate Cameron Press that he and the victim had issues spanning 40 years.
Mclaughlin said he used to be employed by the man, but eventually resigned and stated he had suffered emotional and physical abuse from the elderly man over the years.
Mclaughlin told the court the assault incident was not as it seemed.
He said it stemmed from a previous incident at the local IGA where the 79-year-old told Mclaughlin that he was "at the bottom of the heap" and had pushed him.
Mclaughlin said when he approached him on July 21 he yelled out to him about the comment the elderly man made at the IGA.
After the assault McLaughlin said he apologised to the man.
"The way he acted (at the assault incident) like he didn't know me," Mclaughlin said.
Mr Press told Mclaughlin he had heard enough about the alleged ongoing dispute between the two men.
Mclaughlin was fined $500 and no conviction was recorded.
