Opacic set to miss start of new season

NRL: The Brisbane Broncos' young centre Tom Opacic looks like missing the start of the 2017 season after having reconstructive surgery on both shoulders.

Opacic had his first reconstruction on Thursday and will have the same procedure on his other shoulder next month.

He carried the first shoulder problem into the finals after hurting it in the away win over the Melbourne Storm on August 26.

Then in the sudden-death semi-final against the Cowboys, he left the field early in the second half after his other shoulder popped out.

"Tom is going to have a long recovery,” Broncos high-performance manager Jeremy Hickmans said.

"It is very unlucky for him but if things go as planned he would be available in the first couple of months of the 2017 NRL season.”

Meanwhile, Broncos utility Kodi Nikorima is recovering well from his own shoulder reconstruction three weeks ago.

Alex Glenn also had a shoulder operation on Thursday, to repair his AC joint.

Nikorima and Glenn should be ready for next year's trials.
