AMERICAN talk show queen Oprah Winfrey is returning to Australia for the first time in five years embarking on a multi-city speaking tour.

An Evening with Oprah will kick off at Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena on December 2 before travelling to Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Sydney and Auckland.

Winfrey has promised to share her personal story and life insights in what has been billed as a one-of-a-kind intimate evening.

Tickets to the tour go on sale on July 27.

The last time Winfrey was in Australia she brought with her more than 300 of her most faithful talk show fans in what was her final season on-air.

It is believed more than 300,000 people applied for tickets to see her appearance at the Sydney Opera House forecourt with tourism chiefs across the country saying the "Oprah effect" resulted in a mini tourism boom for the nation.
