Pet vs pet in State of Adoption

THE State of Adoption begins today.

That is right, you read correctly, as the cockroaches and cane toads battle it out for rugby league supremacy over the coming weeks in the State of Origin series, the RSPCA New South Wales and Queensland branches are setting their own interstate animal re-homing challenge.

From the first Origin match to the third and final, the RSPCA will tap into the rivalry by giving all new adopters the chance to win tickets to the final clash at Suncorp Stadium.

The Tweed Heads RSPCA adoption centre has some fantastic animals in need of caring owners, spokeswoman Marianne Zander said. “The Tweed shelter is very small, which is why it's called an adoption centre, and in terms of the challenge it would be considered a featherweight,” Ms Zander said.

“It's so small many people overlook or pass it by. But we hope, with the challenge, it attracts more attention and helps NSW win.”

RSPCA Qld spokesman Michael Beatty said staff and volunteers admitted the State of Adoption challenge was a less-than-subtle adaptation of the State of Origin series.

“Of course it's a rip-off on the whole concept, but if we're re-homing more animals then it's all worthwhile,” Mr Beatty said.

He said he realised RSPCA NSW headed into the challenge as favourites because it had 12 shelters as opposed to Queensland's nine, though the latter still managed to win 2010's challenge.
