1150 jobs expected with new Orion expansion

THE next stage of a major expansion of Orion Shopping Centre in Springfield is under way.

Developer Mirvac has begun detailed design of the planned new supermarket at Orion Springfield Central.

Along with the supermarket, the extension will include a new tavern and bottle shop, 40 additional specialty stores, extra commercial suites and almost 600 new car parking spaces.

The extension was approved by the Ipswich City Council in February, clearing the way for the construction of more than 14,057 sq m of retail space including a 5650 sq m supermarket.

The supermarket development comes only months after a new Woolworths was opened down the road at Brookwater.

It is the latest in a string of developments for the booming region which will also see a major new train station open later this year.

Mirvac general manager retail Susan MacDonald said the company was looking to give the community an update later in the year, before construction began.

"We are excited by the progress and are working to ensure we achieve the right tenants to make Orion an even more successful and vibrant community centre," she said.

The expansion is expected to provide 550 jobs during construction and a further 600 once the stores are operational.

The supermarket expansion follows the successful leasing of the Circuit at Orion with Hogs Breath Cafe, Amart Sports and BCF set to open later in the year, joining the recently opened KFC, Kmart Tyre and Auto, Bridgestone Select and Supercheap Auto.

Orion is already home to a Woolworths, a Big W and an ALDI supermarket.

Ms MacDonald said the new stores would help service the booming Springfield community.
