FORMER Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh was known for his fighting qualities as a cricketer but even he was amazed by the courage of Highfields youngster Hayden Siebuhr.

Hayden was one of five children recognised at a gala ceremony in Sydney yesterday as a Take 5 Brave Kid, winning the sporting champ award.

Former Toowoomba youngster Blake Rice was also recognised with the bravery award for his efforts overcoming the tragic deaths of his mother Donna and brother Jordan in the January floods.

Hayden was only two when doctors discovered he had a spinal tumour, a condition which has left him wheelchair-bound.

But it has not stopped Hayden chasing his dreams. The talented swimmer is now the Queensland under 12 record holder for the 100m and one day aims to compete for Australia at the Paralympics.

Mr Waugh was one of two judges for the award and met Hayden at the ceremony to pass on some advice to help him succeed in sport.

"It came as a shock," Hayden said of winning the award and getting to meet Mr Waugh.

Blake's father John Tyson said his son was rapt at winning the bravery award.

"It's been a tough year, Blake's lost his mum, his brother, been bullied and had to settle into a new life. But he's been so strong."
