A WEBSITE and subsequent book have taken aim at Bundaberg's hallowed spirit in a satirical attack on boganism.
The six authors of Things Bogans Like have named Bundaberg Rum among a hit-list of bogan staples such as mullets, "wife-beater singlets" and lowered Commodores.
The self-appointed "boganomists", who spend business hours as economists, this week released their second book titled Boganomics: The science of why bogans like the things they do.
A co-author who writes under the pen name Chas McSween said Bundaberg Rum had been an obvious inclusion on the Things Bogans Like register.
"It's a staple of the bogan lifestyle all over Queensland and much of Australia," he said.
"It has long been a drink favoured by the bogan and its pre-mix varieties are proving massively popular with the younger generations."
Mr McSween stopped short of labelling the Bundaberg region itself as bogan, but said bogans had been found in central and northern Queensland in elevated numbers.
"We're not quite sure of the exact reason," he said.
"But we do know that there is a direct correlation between the number of bogans and the availability of open waterways such as oceans and rivers."
He said the books were not written as a criticism of the nation's lower classes or the stereotypical bogans of the 1980s.
A spokesperson for Bundaberg Rum refused to comment directly on the inclusion of the popular drink in the bogan bible.
Instead, the company said the spirit had become associated with mateship, celebration and true Aussie ingenious thinking over its 123-year history.
"We're proud of our heritage and what the brand stands for, and we're fortunate that consumers are so passionate about Bundy," the spokesperson said.
"Bundaberg Rum will always retain a larrikin sense of humour, but we also draw on the rich heritage and craftsmanship that the ... Bundaberg Distilling Company was built on."
