OPINION: It's time for harsher punishments for sex offenders
SIX months in prison for possessing 150,000 images/videos of sickening, horrible things.
Once again, the community's expectations have not been met when it came to sentencing a Hervey Bay man in district court.
Today's front page of the Fraser Coast Chronicle serves as a reminder to us all that there is still a lot of work needed to bring the justice system into line with Australia's expectations.
I would be surprised if any of the 60,000 people who read the Chronicle on a daily basis would disagree with me that six months is not enough for such vile crimes.
The story on page 4 says to me that it is time for our community's political leaders to become a part of the much needed change.
Every time we have to report on these sorts of people, we are inundated with messages from people wanting change to penalties.
Where is the deterrent?
Six months behind bars certainly is not one I would consider harsh, far from it in fact.

How much longer can we as a society accept this?
Frankly, I am sick of being sickened.
