Our talented young life savers learn from ironman champion

FOR Hervey Bay's talented young life savers there is no better experience than spending the weekend with lifesaving's best.

SLSQ Wide Bay Capricorn Branch hosted an athlete development camp in Hervey Bay for 45 talented junior lifesavers, pictured, at the weekend.

Reigning Queensland ironman champion Matt Bevilacqua and state beach coach Ryan Hoffman dropped into Surf Life Saving Queensland's Athlete Development Program at Hervey Bay.

Hervey Bay cadet life saver Kirra Horton, 15, said the camp gave her valuable skills that were usually only offered to the bigger clubs.

"Having Matt and the state coach was really cool," she said.

"It was something that we don't usually get to experience here in Hervey Bay - we learnt a lot

"I can't wait to take away my new skills to the north Australian titles at the end of the month.

Program co-ordinator Jamie Findlay said it was a unique opportunity to learn from some of the best.

"It was a great weekend for the kids and they all took something out of it," he said.

"Throughout the three days there were lessons in nutrition and recovery."

The program is designed to provide young, up-and-coming, athletes aged 13-17 years with personal training and development opportunities and access to professional athletes and coaches in a bid to fast track their development in the sport."
