Outside draws for favourites

THE barrier draw has created further intrigue for Saturday's $3 million Tatts Cox Plate, with favoured runners Helmet, Jimmy Choux and Lion Tamer all drawing outside alleys.

But it was all smiles for the Jim Conlan-trained Rekindled Interest, who firmed from $13 into $11 with Betstar after drawing a perfect marble (three) shortly after comfortably accounting for Jimmy Choux in trackwork at this morning's Moonee Valley's Breakfast with the Stars.

With 16 runners paid up for the race, the Moonee Valley Racing Club chose to elevate 2007 Melbourne Cup winner Efficient into the starting line-up ahead of mares Yosei and Avienus, who have been named emergencies.

MVRC chairman Bob Scarborough said he felt Efficient, who has started just twice since his victory in the Turnbull Stakes more than two years ago, deserved to "be given his opportunity" given he consistently achieved a 120 rating in his previous preparations.

Scarborough said even though Yosei was a three-time Group 1 winner, the committee chose to leave her out of the 14-horse starting line-up as her form beyond 1600m was not sufficient.
