Palaszczuk's visit to Governor not presumptuous

ELECTING a new premier is a straightforward process, even when there is possible court action over results in one electorate, says a political scientist.

Griffith University's Professor Anne Tiernan said the formation of a government and possible court action in the electorate of Ferny Grove were two completely separate issues.

She said a by-election in Ferny Grove might not even happen. It was a matter for the courts to decide, which could take months.

Professor Tiernan, who has written a book about political caretaker conventions, said it was not inappropriate for Labor leader Annastacia Palaszczuk to visit the Governor earlier this week.

Ms Palaszczuk was criticised for her visit to Paul de Jersey on Tuesday, when not even half the state's seats had been declared.

But Professor Tiernan said it was entirely reasonable for Ms Palaszczuk to keep Mr de Jersey informed about the progress of her negotiations with the minor parties and independent Peter Wellington.

Once all the seats were officially declared, Professor Tiernan said Mr de Jersey would decide on who he would invite to form the next government.

She said the situation was unusual because former premier Campbell Newman had lost his seat. But the normal post-election conventions were straightforward.

"It's really not that controversial and complex," she said. "The politicking around it is inevitable. But the conventions are in place and I expect them to be followed when the election result is clear."
