MAD HATTERS, Alice, the Queen of Hearts, Tweedledum and Tweedledee and Cheshire cats all made an appearance in Gladstone yesterday when the 49th annual Gladstone Harbour Festival got under way.

The 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan street parade, presented by the Rotary Club of Gladstone Midday, had people lined up along the parade route well before the start.

Big hats, small hats, crazy hats and slightly off-beat hats were the order of the day at the Mad Hatters-themed parade. As were tea parties, balloons, bubbles and lollypops.

Smiling faces beamed out from the big rigs towing the floats and the truck drivers blasted their air-horns at one another. An impressive 54 floats took part in the parade.

Cartwheeling downhill caused a few gasps, as did the lone unicycle rider, who did a fantastic job.

Last night, the parade winners were announced at the opening night festivities, with the overall award going to the float from the Captain Cook 1770 Festival.

The other winners were: Educational facility – Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School; Kindergarten or child care facility – Birralee Kindergarten; Organisation or club – Quota International Gladstone Inc; Historical group – Callide Dawson Old Machinery; Decorated bicycles – Jack Newton; Small business – Austral Lending Solutions; and large business – McCosker Contracting.

Last night's entertainment took the crowd back to the disco era with Disco Mania and had people up dancing in front of the Marina stage.

The evening finished off with the Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal fireworks display.
