Pat on the back for stepping up to the platelet
AUSTRALIA'S 500,000 blood donors are getting a pat on the back for stepping up to the platelet over the past year.
As National Blood Donor Week gets underway, the Australian Red Cross is celebrating the achievements of its donors.
Each week they collectively give 25,000 donations - or one donation every eight seconds.

Red Cross spokesman Shaun Inguanzo said one in three Australians needed donated blood in their lifetime.
"From cancer patients to road trauma victims, people with blood disorders to burns victims, donated blood has many and varied uses and underpins quality healthcare in Australia," Mr Inguanzo said.
