Patel to face another trial
FORMER Queensland surgeon Jayant Patel, who was released from prison last week after the High Court quashed his convictions, will face another trial.
Dr Patel was convicted in 2010 of three counts of manslaughter and one count of grievous bodily harm over operations at the Bundaberg Hospital, where he worked as a surgeon between 2003 and 2005.
However, in a unanimous decision last week, the High Court quashed his conviction, opening the door to a retrial.
Director of Public Prosecutions Tony Moynihan, SC, this afternoon confirmed he would pursue another trial against Dr Patel.
"I have carefully considered the judgment and I am satisfied that, on the admissible evidence, there are reasonable prospects of a conviction and it is in the public interest to proceed with a new trial," Mr Moynihan said in a statement.
