CRITICALLY ill patients made the move into the new Mackay Base Hospital's intensive care and coronary care unit yesterday morning in a tightly controlled operation.

The seven patients, including two on ventilators, were wheeled about 500 metres from the old hospital to the new via a covered walkway.

Each patient was accompanied by a team of six doctors, nurses and physiotherapists.

Nurse unit manager Amanda Gibson said the first patient left the old ICU/CCU at 8am and the last at 10am.

"These patients are the most seriously ill in the hospital so each move had to be carefully planned and managed," Ms Gibson said.

"The move went according to plan and without incident," she said.

Ms Gibson said staff enjoyed their first shifts in the new facility.

"We've worked towards this day for about three years so it's very exciting to move into such a spectacular work area.

"I've worked in intensive care units around Australia and this is alongside the best."

The ICU and CCU has moved with the same service capacity.

The ICU has the potential to expand from five beds to six and the CCU from five to eight.

"There's plenty of room for growth in our service here over time so it's a good feeling to know this unit has been designed for the future, not just what we need now," Ms Gibson said.

Medical Ward 2 also moved seven patients yesterday while pathology opened its new laboratory and collection area. The renal unit is in its new location, along with pharmacy and medical imaging.

Operating theatres and the central sterile supply department have started to move stock and equipment and will open in their new areas from 7am Saturday.
