DEPUTY Premier and long-serving Labor MP Paul Lucas has confirmed he will step down at the next state election, ending a 13-year political career.

Mr Lucas will step down as deputy premier tomorrow, but will continue in ministerial roles until the election.

Mr Lucas is also the Attorney-General and also holds the Local Government and Special Minister of State portfolios.

The outgoing Deputy Premier became emotional as he thanked his partner and four children for their support.

"After 15 years I think it's time for me to move on and for renewal to take place," he said.

Mr Lucas rejected suggestions from reporters he was "jumping from a sinking ship".
