THE NRL will reportedly kick off its 2018 season with a historic double-header at Perth's new sporting stadium.

The Western Australian revealed the NRL is planning to host back-to-back games at the new Perth Stadium on Saturday, March 10.

It's believed the double-header will highlight round one of the competition, and get a jump on the AFL two weeks before the rival's season kicks off.

The Bulldogs and the Rabbitohs are the two clubs who would host the games. The opponents will not be confirmed until the draw is released.

The stadium could hold a crowd of 45,000 for the double-header.

Western Australia Sports Minister Mick Murray is confident the fixture will draw a lot of local interest.

"We expect this double-header to be extremely popular," he said.

"The NRL premiership fixture between the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the New Zealand Warriors played at nib Stadium in June 2015 was a sellout match.

"The crowd of 20,272 still holds the record for sporting event attendance at the venue since its redevelopment."
