Petition to stop 'gay recruiting' Safe Schools lags

AN ONLINE petition calling for the Federal Government to stop a school-based anti-homophobia and anti-transphobia education program is garnering little interest.

Fewer than 500 people have signed the Stop the March of Gay Recruiting Campaign in Primary and High Schools petition since it went live on Tuesday.

The Change.Org petition, which had just 388 signatures at 7.45pm on Wednesday, is the work of political party Family First.

Family First MP Bob Day says he wants the Safe Schools gender and sexuality program shut down until it is approved by "all school parents".

However, gay activist Rodney Croome said the program helped reduce homophobia and transphobia in schools.

"The attacks we are seeing against Safe Schools are motivated by exactly the kind of misinformation and prejudice the program is designed to counteract," the Australian Marriage Equality national director said.
