Plain packs turn off smokers

PLAIN-packaged cigarettes are turning smokers off tobacco, a landmark study revealed on Friday.

The Cancer Institute of New South Wales research showed that three months after plain packs were introduced in late 2012, 80% of smokers believed their packets were not attractive.

It also showed that over the same period, the number of smokers encouraged to quit by visual package warnings grew from 13% to 20%.

More smokers also told the researchers that the package warnings made them worry they should not be smoking, rising from 13% to 27% in three months.
