Plan to fix Lady Cilento tech and 'culture' issues

A PLAN to fix Brisbane's Lady Cilento Hospital is on the cards, according to the Queensland AMA president.

Dr Chris Zappala met with Queensland health minister Cameron Dick on Monday where Mr Dick outlined a plan to turn around hospital.

Dr Zapalla said the children's hospital has struggled with technology and "cultural" issues following the merging of the Royal Children's Hospital and the Mater Children's Hospital.

The government is currently investigating the death of a 12-year-old Bundaberg boy and a 15-month-old Maryborough girl after they had emergency surgery delayed.

Despite this Dr Zappala said he did not believe patient care had ever lapsed.

"I don't think the standards of care were ever lacking at Lady Cilento hospital. All we've ever said is that the staff needed time and more resources and a better voice for clinicians to solve the problems," he said.

"So I don't think there's ever been any question that the standard of care has been excellent."

Dr Zappala said the merging the two hospitals had caused some "cultural" issues at the Lady Cilento.

"It was always going to be a hard task to meld to very different hospitals, two very different cultures into one seamless organisation."

A spokesman for Mr Dick told Fairfax Media the plan would be announced this week.
