Leichhardt playoffs for 2013 State Mixed Pairs a nail-biter

EMERALD and Longreach faced off in the final of the Leichhardt playoffs which went down to the nail-biting last bowl.

The Emerald Bowls Club hosted the Leichhardt playoffs for the 2013 State Mixed Pairs at the weekend with 11 teams entering from Longreach, Dysart, Middlemount, Springsure and Emerald Clubs.

Leichhardt District Men's Bowls Association secretary David Ling said Emerald couple Al and Gwen Crampton were up against Coral Williamson and Ray Harmsworth from Longreach in the final.

"The lead throughout the final was always tight, changing on several occasions," Ling said.

"All players in the final showed their experience in big games, never delivering loose bowls away from the head, making ideal viewing for spectators."

The final was scheduled to be played over 21 ends, and scores after end 20 saw Emerald leading by a single shot.

"Ray elected to play with weight with his last bowl in the next two ends, taking the kitty out of bounds resulting in the end being declared 'dead' and replayed," Ling said.

"All players rolled great bowls in the final end, with Ray and Coral drawing two shots, making them the winners with scores at 19-18."

Williamson and Harmsworth will go on and represent the Leichhardt District in the Zone 7 playoffs against Mackay District at Emerald in August.
