UPDATE: Police have released an identikit image of the man who attacked a New South Wales woman outside the Criterion Hotel.

Rockhampton CIB acting-boss Detective Sergeant Nick Williams said the woman was locked out of her room early on Saturday morning.

She was sitting outside the hotel on the Fitzroy Street side of the building.

The brazen offender has then approached her and asked her if she wanted to have sex.

He has then pulled a gun out on her and viciously attacked her.

Det Sgt Williams said the woman was in Rockhampton for the yearling sales.

She has since travelled back to New South Wales.

EARLIER: POLICE are searching through CCTV footage to track down a gunman who hit a woman outside a popular Rockhampton nightspot on Saturday morning.

A 24-year-old woman was punched in the face and robbed at 5.30am while standing in Fitzroy St outside the Criterion Hotel.

The man walked from the southern end of the Fitzroy bridge and came up to her on the footpath.

After briefly speaking to the woman, he moved on.

But it's reported the man came back later and showed the woman a handgun.

He tried to pull the woman away, while punching her in the face.

During the struggle, money fell from the woman's purse.

The man scooped up the money and ran off down Quay St.

The woman, from New South Wales, suffered a cut to her eye and bruising to her face.

She was expected to speak to police yesterday afternoon.

Meanwhile, police are asking the public for help to find the man.

He has been described as Caucasian, about 19 or 20 years old, 173cm tall with short cropped blonde hair.

He was wearing a dark hooded jumper, dark board shorts with a white stripe down the side, and black sneakers.

Anyone with information that may help police should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
