Police charge two men after dramatic gunpoint arrest
UPDATE, Friday 10.30am:
Tweed Byron LAC police have charged two men in relation a dramatic arrest at Cabarita Beach on Thursday afternoon.
INITIAL REPORT, Thursday 4.30pm:
A POLICE pursuit ended at gunpoint today when a dramatic arrest was made of two assailants at Cabarita Beach.
Residents were shocked when they heard a loud car crash on Hastings Rd near Banskia Ave, at about 3.40pm.
NSW Ambulance confirmed they were called to a three-vehicle collision near the intersection.
Gina Merillo was working from home on paperwork when she "heard a loud bang” out on the street.
"It was a pretty loud impact, the car must have bounced and I just thought straight away 'I hope its not a child',” Ms Merillo said.
"I looked out and two policewomen with guns jumped out and called out to two young men in their car.
"It had been side-swiped. One boy fell out of the car and the other one jumped out, onto the grass.”
The two men were arrested and their car searched, with police swarming the area moments later. They were still diverting traffic from the site around 4.20pm.
"There was half a dozen cop cars; four marked cars, two plain-clothed private detectives and an ambulance,” Ms Merillo said.
NSW Ambulance said they assessed three patients and none required any treatment.
Tweed/Byron LAC Police were not available for comment.
