Man who sparked police chase charged with drink driving

UPDATE: A 41-year-old man has been charged with drink driving after he smashed through a shopfront fence and bolted from the scene. 

The Burpengary man has been charged with mid-range drink driving after he allegedly registered a blood alcohol reading of .135% on Tuesday night after he was finally caught by police. 

Witnesses say the man crashed into a motorcycle shop fence on Baden Powell St at Maroochydore about 6.30pm before fleeing from the scene.

Police apprehended the man on Wharf St near the Duporth Tavern after a foot chase through the CBD. 

The man is due to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on March 24. 

EARLIER: A man led police on a foot chase in the Maroochydore CBD after smashing his car through a shopfront fence.

Police have apprehended a man behind the Duporth Tavern after the short chase which started at Baden Powell St.

Witnesses say the man crashed into the fence of a motorcycle dealership about 6.30pm on Tuesday before reversing back on to the road. He then jumped out of the car and fled through business and private properties towards the river.


A witness known as "Taryn" said she heard two bangs and then saw the car reversing into the street.

"He stopped and stood next to the car like he was going to wait for the police and then he just bolted."

"We followed in our car and kept meeting up with him, he knew he was screwed."
