Swift water rescue teams search for body at New Chum quarry

UPDATE: Police believe a teen has drowned at a quarry at New Chum, near Ipswich.

Emergency services were called to the quarry after reports the boy disappeared below the surface after jumping into the water-filled quarry.

The boy had jumped from a high ledge, resurfacing briefly before sinking back below the surface.

Police divers and QFES swift water rescue technicians are searching for the boy but grave fears are held for him.

Police are asking members of the public to avoid the area whilst officers and other agencies conduct the search.

Officers are also advising the public to avoid trespassing on private property and swimming in unpatrolled and unsecure areas including quarries.
