Police gatecrash Facebook party

A PARTY organised on Facebook was shut down by police early Sunday morning when hundreds of gatecrashers threatened to send it spiralling out of control.

About 1.15am Sunday, Drayton and Toowoomba police closed down the 18th birthday party, held at Jack Martin Centre on Anzac Avenue, Drayton, after complaints of underage drinking and public disturbances.

About 400 young people responded to the Facebook invitation.

The event was registered with Party-Safe, which notifies police of party locations to allow for patrols in conjunction with operational requirements.

However, Drayton police senior constable Stephen Coote said organisers failed to provide security and supervision outlined in the Party-Safe registration in place.

He said it was compounded by the fact Jack Martin Centre was not a licensed premises.

“Because it was held at a private venue with BYO alcohol, organisers were not required to provide the same level of security and supervision required by legislation at a licensed premises,” he said.

Snr Const. Coote said parents should ensure they are aware of the type of event of party their children were attending.

“Police would like to see parents take more responsibility for the safety of their children in allowing them to attend parties of this nature, especially if they don’t know who’s running the party and if it’s going to be put on the internet” he said.
