Police in Helensvale raid call for backup from snake catcher

GOLD Coast RAP police regularly conduct searches that uncover drugs and drug paraphernalia, but it's not every day that they uncover exotic animals.

Police excecuted a search on a Helensvale property on Monday around 5.30pm, but were forced to call for backup from the local snake catcher.

Police allegedly uncovered an estimated value of $18,000 worth of methylamphetamine, various drug utensils, a sum of cash and four snakes at the Wilmington Court address.

A snake handler removed two native pythons and two exotic American corn snakes, which are a declared pest.

The reptiles were handed over to officers from the Department of National Parks.

A 38-year-old Helensvale man has been charged with four counts of animal related charges including keeping a declared pest and restriction on keeping/taking a protected animal, eight drug related charges including possession and one count of obstructing police.

He is scheduled to reappear in the Southport Magistrates Court on February 16.
