Police identify head found at Rottnest Island

POLICE have confirmed the human head found off the Western Australian coast belongs to known drug trafficker Stephen Ramon Cookson.

A young girl was holidaying with family at Rottnest Island when she made the grisly discovery earlier this month.

Cookson, 56, had strong links to the racing industry in WA and Victoria where his family lives.

According to News.com.au, he was convicted in 2000 on one charge of possessing and intending to sell heroin.

Five years later he was fined $5000 for breaking a former horse owner's nose.

Detectives have interviewed several men in relation to Cookson's murder and his Perth unit has been declared a crime scene.

He had been due to appear in a WA court this week on amphetamine charges.
