NEW South Wales police say thrill seekers are risking their lives chasing the ultimate adventure after video emerged of people plunging off a Sydney cliff face.

Thrill seekers posted the video online this week showing climbers using professional equipment hanging from the edge of the notorious North Head cliffs near Manly then letting go.

They freefall almost 70m and swing back and forth on the rope that is anchored to a rock.

The cliff face is known among the climbing fraternity as The Fear.

Police Superintendent Dave Darcy told Channel 9 he was concerned that people who do not have the expertise, knowledge or specific equipment would see the video and think the feat was achievable.

He said if anyone fell from the 100m plus cliff face they would almost certainly be killed.

"When these activities go wrong, and inevitably they will, it is members of the emergency services who have to attend and investigate the full circumstances," Supt Darcy said.

"Sadly the recent death of a man who fell and died at the location appears to have done nothing to deter this type of risk-taking activity."

The activity is illegal in NSW and adrenalin junkies who are caught face a $300 fine.
