Pollie property barons: Investment properties of Fed MPs

THE negative gearing debate is one which just keeps coming back and there's no let up in site for the Turnbull Government as housing affordability remains an issue especially in major centres.

And while the Coalition says it took the issue to the election and won't be changing its policy of supporting the controversial tax break for property investors, Labor continues to oppose it.

Which would be fine except at least two prominent members from the ALP's front bench appear to be continuing beneficiaries of the scheme.

Shadow Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus owns not just the family home in Malvern, near Toorak in Victoria but also an interest in a South Yarra property through his super fund.

And Dreyfus' wife owns two investment properties, one in Camberwell in Victoria and another in Airey's Inlet - also in Victoria.

He's not alone in Bill Shorten's shadow cabinet as a pollie benefiting from both sides - last week Anothony Albanese told the Today Show: "We have here the most senior Liberal Planning Minister in the country, Rob Stokes, belling the cat on an issue that Australians know is an issue for their kids and their grandkids."

"We are in danger of developing a society whereby some people are able to buy their sixth, seventh, eighth home, but people trying to get into the housing market to buy their first home simply aren't able to."

Mr Albanese owns family home in Marrickville in Sydney, a unit in Canberra which he also lists as a "home".

He also owns two investment properties - one with his spouse, former NSW Labor MP Carmel Tebbutt in Marrickville and another investment in Dulwich Hill, also in Sydney.

Of course there are those among the Labor elite who walk the talk - both Bill Shortern and Tanya Plibersek own only their family homes.

And the property portfolios of the Labor front-bench pale in comparison to those on the other side of the house.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull owns his harbour-side mansion in Sydney's exclusive Point Piper, an apartment in Canberra which he describes on his disclosure of inetersts as a residence for business purposes and a commercial property in Point Piper.

His wife Lucy owns two investment properties in the illustrious Sydney suburbs of Paddington and an apartment in New York.

Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop also appears to like her real-estate with a home in Crawley in Perth Australia and two investments, one in the up-market Canberra suburb of Red Hill and another investment property in Basket Range in the Adelaide Hills.

And Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has recently come into the media spotlight over his ever-extending property portfolio.

Mr Dutton owns a home in Camp Mountain in Brisbane's north,  another property in Kingston- which he lists as residential. He also lists an investment on Moreton Island.

His wife Kirrily owns a property in Everton Park and the pair purportedly just purchased another investment in Townsville as well as a property on Palm Beach on the Gold Coast.

However there is still at least one member of the Coalition's front bench who has been able to resist the lure of negative gearing - Treasurer Scott Morrison.

That's right the man in charge of the country's accounts owns only the family home - in Doolans Bay in southern Sydney.
