Poor final round denies Scott shot at the top

AUSTRALIA'S Adam Scott has missed his chance to take the world No.1 spot from Tiger Woods after a poor final round at The Players Championship in Florida yesterday.

Scott (pictured) needed to finish in the top 16 at TPC Sawgrass but his final round 1-over (73) saw him finish on 2-under in a tie for 38th spot.

The Aussie finished 11 shots behind winner Martin Kaymer, who fought off a challenge from American Jordan Spieth to win by one shot from Jim Furyk, who had a 66 to finish on 12-under on his own in second as Spieth dropped away with a 74 to end up on 10-under.

Australian Matt Jones fell to 6-under overall after dropping two shots, to finish in a tie for 17th.

Fellow Aussie John Senden (tied for 26th) fell down the rankings after firing a 2-over round to finish on 7-under, after looking to challenge the leaders after round three, while Marc Leishman climbed to a tie for 23 with a 5-under 67.
