IAN Poulter has stormed to the clubhouse lead of the JBWere Masters after posting a first round six-under score at the Victoria Golf Club in Melbourne.

Teeing off early on the back nine, the Englishman shot down seven birdies to just one bogey to record an opening round of 65.

Just one from a strong field of internationals, Poulter outshone fellow countryman and headline act Luke Donald, the first man to top both the US PGA and European money leaderboards.

Playing with Australian Geoff Ogilvy and Marcus Fraser, Donald sits four shots off Poulter after finishing with a bogey-free two-under.

Greg Chalmers - chasing a rare season treble of all major Australian titles - is currently at one-under with seven holes still to play.

The Australian Open and PGA champion has had a mixed day on the fairways, sinking three birdies but slipping up with a duo of bogey putts.
