PRESSURE is mounting on Russia to support the removal of Syria's ruthless leader President Bashar al-Assad.

The civil war embroiled nation has been plagued by another civilian massacre over the weekend, this time claiming 200 innocent lives in the town of Tremseh.

Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr said the transition of power away from President Assad would help implement a much needed ceasefire.

He has instructed his department to communicate Australia's views to the Russian Chargé d'Affaires Nikolay Nozdrev.
